Pupil Premium
What is the Pupil Premium Grant?
In 2011-12 the Government launched its Pupil Premium funding.
This initiative targets extra money at pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds into the school’s budget to enable them to be supported to reach their potential. The government believes this is the best way to address current underlying inequalities caused by disadvantage.
This grant is additional to main school funding. The money is devolved to schools based on the numbers of pupils in the school who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). From 2013-14, it was expanded to include all children who have been eligible for FSM within the last 6 years.
In addition, schools receive a grant for the number of children in care and children whose parents work in the Armed Forces.
More vital information can be found here:
- At Brayton Primary School we ensure that teaching and learning opportunities meet the needs of all of the children.
- We ensure that appropriate provision is made for children who belong to vulnerable groups, this includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged children are adequately assessed and addressed.
- In making provision for socially disadvantaged children, we recognise that not all children who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged. We also recognise that not all children who are socially disadvantaged are registered or qualify for free school meals. We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any child or groups of children the school has legitimately identified as being socially disadvantaged.
- Limited funding and resources means that not all children receiving free school meals will be in receipt of pupil premium interventions at one time.
- All our work through the pupil premium will continue to be aimed at accelerating progress moving children to at least age related expectations at least in Literacy and Numeracy.

Monitoring
Mrs Buckton and the Governors and responsible for monitoring and oversight of the Pupil Premium Children. The Safeguarding Committee and Achievements Committee meet regularly to discuss the school’s strategy for pupil premium children and monitor the spending and impact of this.
It is important that if you are in a family that may be eligible for free school meals you claim for them. This is now doubly important since the introduction of Universal Infant Free School Meals: some parents think that because their child already receives a free meal it is not necessary for them to apply.
We send regular reminders outlining the importance of applying for this grant as the school does not automatically get the money – it depends on parents claiming their Free School Meal entitlement. If you are not sure, please contact the school office: we deal sensitively with enquiries and will always respect your privacy.
